your business is part of your companys marketing program

Job Security in the Midst of a Recession by Jason Begley

So 2009 is upon us, and you survived yet another year. The question now is, will your job be around the next time? What can you do to help ensure your job security in unsecured economic times? It seems that the current recession that the nation, and frankly a better part of the entire world, is mired in is one of the worst economic down turns we have seen in many decades. This unrest has led to the highest unemployment rate in twenty-six years. It would be difficult to say that there are many industries that are immune to the symptoms of our current fiscal conundrum.

While many would say that our troubles began with the decline of the artificially inflated housing market, the trickle-down effect has reached millions. As homeowners, investors, and real estate professionals such as realtors, mortgage brokers, title agents, appraisers, and new home construction workers, suffered losses and shrinkage of revenues, this led to an overall reduction of consumer spending. This has meant fewer people buying luxury items and even necessities like food and clothing.

All of this has resulted in less money being earned and spent across the board. With less revenue to work with, more and more companies are struggling to pay their overhead. This means layoffs. Lots and lots of layoffs as companies fight to survive. So what can you do as an employee to help secure your position?

Unfortunately, there may not be a lot you can do, because there are so many circumstances that are out of your direct control. You cannot control management plans or industry trends, but that does not mean you are entirely helpless.

One thing you can do is take this opportunity to show your employer that you are willing to do what it takes to help the company succeed. Put in those extra hours, take on those extra responsibilities, and bring your focus on customer service to a new level. Always be mindful of everything you can do to aid in your employers efforts to weather the financial storm we have been immersed in over the last year. This is a great chance to prove your loyalty and position yourself for longevity and possible advancements once the economic environment improves.

Employers have the luxury at this point of having a deeper pool of talent to draw from. There are more job seekers out there than there have been for decades. Now is definitely the time to shine in the eyes of your employer.

No matter what your position or set of responsibilities at your current place of employment, it is important to remember that every interaction that each customer has with your business is part of your companys marketing program. That means from the first person who greets them on the phone or when they visit your location to the last interaction they have with your companys product, service, or personnel, customer service is an absolute must. Set your company apart from the competition, and set yourself apart in the mind of your employer.
